Severe burns cause disruption of collagen protein rendering skin inelastic. If circumferential, the burn may even act as tourniquet. If burns are on chest wall, breathing may become difficult due to inelastic nature of the skin. Escharotomy is a surgical procedure in which long incisions are given on the skin having eschar. This procedure lifts the 'tourniquet' effects, hence limbs can be saved. In addition, chest wall starts moving.
