What are some common reasons for abnormal liver tests?
Causes of Elevated Liver Enzymes • Medicines • Hepatitis • Liver cirrhosis • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease • Herbal supplements • Celiac disease • hemochromatosis • Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency • Hemolysis • Metabolic syndrome • Primary biliary cirrhosis • Primary sclerosing cholangitis • Thyroid disease • Wilson disease
Josesara covered a fair few of the big disorders/conditions. So I'll just add a bit extra: First, it highly depends on the specific Liver panel results that are out of range. The specific combinations (or lack there of) can be a huge indicator to the root cause. In terms of what I'd consider to be the most "common" reasons: * too much acetaminophen * alcoholism * hepatitis * steroid use/abuse Jaundice is usually associated with elevated LFT due to elevated bilirubin. Which would include some conditions Josesara listed like; hemolysis, cirrhosis, hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosojf cholangis, etc. I think his list alludes to these, but here's a few bonus ones: * extrahepatic biliary obstruction * intrahepatic biliary obstruction * gallstones * inflamed gallbladder * cholangiocarcinoma * pancreatitis * spleen is damaged in some manner, causing hemolysis I'm kind of curious if Josesara could expand on the herbal supplement one, and if he had a specific one (or few) in mind. But yes generally speaking any oral supplement or med taken in excess can cause elevated liver panel. If this is personal, HIGH elevated liver panels (like way the f out of range), and especially presenting alongside jaundice and RUQ pain / distention is ABSOLUTELY a medical emergency. I imagine they got a CT scan, and ideally have a ERCP booked if it's a blockage in your biliary tree
