So my current major in college is music therapy. My desired specialization is in the medical field. Itโ€™s a new and upcoming demand but Iโ€™d like to focus on neuro. Is it common practice in hospitals to have a music therapist on staff for pre/post op? Iโ€™ve even heard of using music therapy during neuro surgery to stimulate different parts of the brain considering music uses the entire brain. Have any of you had any experience or seen common practice of music therapy in hospitals or in the medical field? Hoping to be based out of LA someday. Please and thanks for your responses!

That would be a great idea for pre/ post op also for comatose patients in the ICU. Please also consider playing in nursing homes esp for dementia patients. The nursing home I do pet therapy in has a music therapist.๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽน๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽผ

I've seen music therapy in a special unit for elderly people with psychiatric disorders. I think that'd be an easier route to create a career around and you could work to make the neurostimulation a reality in surgery alongside that.

Great Idea but no riem ersment from insurance so it would be an expense the hospital would have to eat.

Yeah, thats is what we are seeing. We used to have music therapy and that department was closed due to the fact it doesn't get reimbursed. So did our pet therapy. However we do have volunteers that took over that department and still provide pet therapy to our patients.

Or you could gift your talents on a volunteer basis๐Ÿ’š

Bad idea probably wonโ€™t work out well. Or jobs would be very scarce
