Mechanical ventilation is a form of artificial breathing apparatus that assists the patient with breathing. The main aim of mechanical ventilation is to provide the patient with adequate oxygen. There are different modes of ventilation which can be set according to the need. These modes are as follows: CONVENTIONAL MODES 1. Volume assist/control: Preset tidal volume is given at a constant rate. 2. Pressure assist/control: The pressure levels are not changed in this type. 3. Pressure support ventilation: Spontaneous or Assisted type of ventilation that is activated by the patient itself and is supported by the ventilator. 4. Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV): Volume control method where preset breaths along with the predetermined volume is provided to help in natural breathing. 5. Pressure SIMV: Preset breaths that are pressure controlled is provided to help in natural breathing. ADAPTIVE MODES Mode where inspiratory pressure is automatically adjusted based on the data received. 1. Adaptive assist/control (A/C) mode 2. Adaptive SIMV mode BIPHASIC MODES Works by alternating between two different preset pressure levels that is time cycled.
