Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a complication of mechanical ventilation that develops 48 hours after the patient is put on ventilator. It is a life threatening nosocomial (hospital acquired) infection that is responsible for increased mortality and morbidity in intubated patients. Commonly involved organisms are Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae and resistant cases includes Pseudomonas aeruginosa, MRSA, Klebsiella and Acinetobacter baumannii Patients with VAP presents with signs and symptoms of fever or low body temperature, Purulent sputum production, hypoxemia and leukocytosis. Diagnostic triad for VAP includes: 1. Signs of infection like fever, leukocytosis, purulent sputum 2. Bacterial evidence of infection in the form of cultures, etc 3. Radiologic findings Treatment includes broad-spectrum antibiotics.
