When is the criteria weaning the patient from mechanical ventilation?
Weaning is the process of putting the patient off the ventilator. The process of weaning should be carried out as soon as possible when the criteria for weaning the patient is met. Weaning can be divided into 3 types depending on the duration: Simple: Weaning after initial assessment. Difficult: Weaning 2 to 7 days after the assessment Prolonged: Weaning 7 days after the assessment. Following parameters should be met for the person to be weaned: • Normal inspiration to expiration ratio • Normal respiratory rate • Reducing FiO2 i.e. less than 0.5 • PEEP no longer required • Normal tidal volume (>5 mL/kg) and airway pressure • PaO2 greater than 60 mm Hg • Hemodynamically stable • Minute ventilation < 10 L/m
