What are the haematological causes of hepatosplenomegaly?
Hepatomegaly is the term used for an enlarged liver size. It can be seen in multiple disorders, some of which are hematological reasons. These include: hemolytic anemia, hematological malignancies (CML, primary mylofibrosis, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), PNH, AIHA, sickle cell disease (SCD), hyper ammonia due to zinc deficiency, disseminated intravascular disease (DIC), antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), HELP syndrome, cryoglobinemia and amyloidosis. The diagnosis is made on bases of liver function test, specific labs for disease (like presence of antibodies or specific cells on peripheral blood picture), ultrasound and scans like CT and MRI.
