Carpel tunnel syndrome is the condition in which compression of median nerve in the carpel tunnel causes severe pain, tingling and weakness of the hand. Median tunnel is the nerve that supplies the thumb and three fingers adjacent to it. Symptoms are: burning, tingling, numbness, weakness, and shock like pain that goes up your arm. Causes of the disease are: repetitive motions, hypothyroidism, obesity, arthritis, diabetes or pregnancy. Risk factors of the disease are: occupational, female gender, history of arthritis, or previous fracture. Diagnosis may be done by x-rays, electromyogram or nerve conduction studies. Management is pain relief, anti-inflammatory medications or surgical release of the compression.
