What is dissociative identity disorder?
It is a mental disorder characterized by the maintenance of at least two distinct and relatively enduring personalitystates. The disorder is accompanied by memory gaps beyond what would be explained by ordinary forgetfulness.The personality states alternately show in a person's behavior ; however, presentations of the disorder vary. Other conditions that often occur in people with DID include PSTD ,personality disorder.
The condition is also known as multiple personality disorder. It is a psychological disorder which causes lack of connection between person’s thoughts, feelings, actions and identity. Cause of the condition include: childhood trauma (physical, emotional or sexual abuse) or environmental stress. Diagnoses is made by presence of 2 different personalities in a person and inability to recall personal information, headaches, amnesia, trances and time loss. Sometimes may even have evidence of self-sabotage. The signs of depersonalization, de-realization, amnesia and identity confusion. According to DSM-5 criteria: two or more distinct identities, amnesia, distressed in their own life and rule out any substance abuse. Treatment options available are: psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, adjunctive therapy.
