What are the causes of a bitemporal hemianopia?
A type of visual abnormality in which partial blindness occurs on the temporal(outer) sides of both eyes. This usually occurs as an association of lesion of optic chiasma where fibers from both eyes cross and then travel opposite to their original sides. Right ones travel to left hemisphere and vice versa. The condition presents due to: pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, meningioma or aneurysms. It presents as history of distorted vision, double vision, confusion or visual hallucinations. Diagnosis is made at routine eye exam. Once doubtful further scans like MRI or CT scan may be done. Management pathway includes diagnosing the lesions or cause, such as symptom may include if tumor is removed.
