The causative agent of primary amebic meningoencephalitis is Naegleria fowleri. The humans get the amoeba from freshwater sources such as river and lakes. The amoeba enters through the nose to reach the brain where it causes infection. The condition is misdiagnosed as bacterial meningitis due to similar sign and symptoms. The signs and symptoms of primary amebic meningitis occur in two different stages.
