This short animated video shows how the traditional open approach is employed to remove a colorectal mass. A large midline incision is given, the abdominal wall is retracted and the lesion exposed. After removal of a sufficient segment of the affected area, anastomosis is achieved and the abdominal wall re-approximated. Compared to a laparoscopic approach, this leads to a longer healing time, a worse scar and more post operative pain. However, it may be necessary in many cases where laparoscopic approach doesn't allow maximal resection.
