When the blood level of lactic acid increases the body enters a state of metabolic acidosis called Lactic Acidosis. This usually happens when someone has compromised liver functioning. Either the synthesis of lactic acid increases or the utilization of lactic acid slows down causing build-up. The causes of Lactic Acidosis are - Heart diseases e.g. Congestive heart failure, cardiac arrest - Severe infection or sepsis - HIV - Cancer - Excessive use of Acetaminophen - Chronic alcoholism - Intense workout - Intense physical activity The symptoms of Lactic Acidosis are - Rapid breathing - Trouble breathing - Fruity or sweet-smelling breath - Jaundice - Muscle cramps - Headache - Loss of appetite The treatment of Lactic Acidosis includes - Treat the root cause - Stop exercising - Drink plenty of water - Intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate
