Grafting is a procedure that involves complete removal of tissue from one site and it’s application at another site. Skin graft is of two main types: Split thickness skin graft (STSG): Involves the complete epidermis with part of some dermis that can be taken from thighs, arms and buttocks with the help of Humby’s knife or Dermatome. STSG can be passed through the mesher to increase the surface area and to remove any seroma or hematoma. This decreases the chances of graft rejection. Full thickness skin graft: Involves complete epidermis, dermis and some part of subcutaneous tissue. This graft is suitable for facial wounds and is usually taken from posterior auricular area, supraclavicular area, arm and forearm.
