Lymphatic flariasis also called as elephantiasis is an infectious disease caused by the Wuchereria bancrofti. The condition is transmitted by female mosquito (Anopheles or Culex species). This condition commonly presents with enlargement of the limbs or genital region due to excessive tissue edema and swelling. This is caused by the obstruction of lymphatic outflow caused by the adult worms in the lymphatic system. Flariasis may be caused by following organisms: 1. Wuchereria bancrofti 2. Brugia malayi 3. B. timori In majority of the cases Wuchereria bancrofti is involved.
