Hemorroids also called piles is a condition characterised by swollen veins around the anal canal. Haemorrhoids are classified into 4 main categories: Class l: Located inside the rectum and only bleeds Class ll: Prolapse and reduces spontaneously Class lll: Prolapse through the anal canal and require manual reduction Class lV: Non-reducible hemorrhoids Risk factors for hemorrhoids are chronic constipation, excessive straining, advanced age and increase in intra-abdominal pressure. The condition clinically presents with bleeding per rectum usually after defecation and sometimes prolapse. Pruritus, rectal fullness and soiling may be seen in some cases.
