Retinitis pigmentosa

Retinitis pigmentosa is a hereditary disorder characterised by progressive dystrophy of retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors (Rod cells). The patient presents with night blindness, visual field constriction and defective vision with the progression of the disease. Signs includes gradual decrease in visual acuity, affected contrast sensitivity and fungus examination shows attenuated retinal blood vessels, pigmentary cone corpuscles or bone-spicules, waxy appearing optic disc and maculopathy.
