Erysipelas

Erysipelas

Erysipelas is an infection of the superficial layers of the skin. The causative organism is a bacteria usually group A beta haemolytic streptococcus. The predominant site of infection is the skin of the lower limbs but it can also involve the face. Symptoms include abrupt onset of fever, chills, shivering and the characteristic intense rash. The rash is fiery red in color and has a sharp, raised border. The affected area is swollen and tender and it may be dimpled resembling an orange skin. The treatment for erysipelas includes general measures like cold packs and analgesia for local pain relief, elevation of the infected limb to reduce swelling and specific treatment which involves the use of oral or IV antibiotics to treat the infection.

Reminds me of cellulitis but I think the difference lies in the borders as erysipelas has a defined boundary.

Erysipelas involves the epidermis and cellulitis involves dermis
