Surgical Sutures

Surgical Sutures

Suture materials are mainly classified as absorbable or non-absorbable with other sub-classes which include natural or synthetic and monofilament or multifilament. Absorbable sutures are opted for sites that heal rapidly (e.g. small bowel anastomosis) as they are broken down by enzymatic reactions of the body. Non-absorbable sutures are preferred for slow healing tissues (e.g. fascia or tendons) as they remain isolated from inflammatory reaction.
