Infective endocarditis is defined as the bacterial infection affecting the valves of heart and endocardium. This results in formation of abnormal growths called vegetations. These vegetations consist of microorganisms and thrombotic debris along with the destruction of involved tissue. It is classified into: Acute endocarditis: Infection by an organism of high virulence with Subacute endocarditis: Infection by low virulence organism. Symptoms are as follows: Fever, heart murmurs, fatigue, chest pain, weakness, hematuria and anemia. Complications includes valvular insufficiency, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease.
