Benign breast lumps can occur due to a variety of reasons among which the most common ones are cysts and fibroadenomas. A lump can also be due to other reasons such as a breast abscess, fat necrosis, galactocele, hematoma or sclerosing adenosis. A breast cyst is a fluid-filled space that appears in the breast tissue and can seem to occur overnight. Cysts are benign in the majority of the cases and are usually formed due to occluded breast gland ducts. A breast fibroadenoma is a solid, firm, smooth non-malignant lump that can occur in any age and is managed depending upon the size and symptomatology. Both of the above mentioned conditions are first detected on physical exam and then further investigated via mammogram or ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration.
