Kaposi's sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that is usually found in patients with advanced HIV infections. Other people who are at risk are those who have weakened immune systems such as after a transplant. It is usually caused by the human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8). This is why HHV-8 is also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus. It clinically manifests as purple, non-pruritic papules on the skin especially on the nose. Th patient may also have purple raised lesions in the oral cavity and even on organs of the GI tract like the stomach. Sometimes other organs are affected too such as the lungs so the patient has additional symptoms like breathlessness, chest pain and hemoptysis.
