Appendicitis refers to acute inflammation of the appendix, typically affecting people 10 to 30 years of age. It is one of the common causes of acute abdomen. The pain of appendicitis is severe; it is mostly felt in right lower quadrant. However, the pain may begin from the umbilical region and then shifts to right lower quadrant. Common symptoms of appendicitis are: - Sudden, severe pain in the right lower quadrant - Nausea and vomiting - Severe pain in umbilical region that eventually shifts to right lower quadrant - Decreased appetite - Flatulence - Bloating - Altered bowel movement - Low-grade fever Appendicitis is associated with severe complications such as: - Rupture of appendix leading to peritonitis - Appendiceal abscess The gold standard management of appendicitis is appendectomy. In case of abscess, drainage and treatment of infection is done prior to removal of appendix.
