Thyroid Associated Ophthalmopathy or Grave's Ophthalmopathy is one of the leading causes of proptosis in adults. The condition is an autoimmune extra-thyroidal manifestation of Grave's Disease. It is characterized by bilateral or unilateral retraction of the eyelids, proptosis, conjunctival hyperemia, extra ocular muscle dysfunction and optic neuropathy. The common symptoms include: diplopia, epiphora, blurred vision and photophobia. Majority of the patients have a mild to moderate and non progressive ocular involvement, which does not require specific treatment. However, in patients with severe Thyroid Associated Ophthalmopathy, the use of steroid therapy, immunosuppressive therapy, somatostatin analogues and orbital radiotherapy may prove beneficial.
