ITBS can also present with bursitis but actually be a shortened hamstring causing pain in both areas. That is what happened to me, misdiagnosed for about 5 years. I don't exactly know how common it is but I found it interesting.
Thank you! My condition was exacerbated by cortisone injections in my bursae. It caused mild osteoarthritis & cartilage damage. I did get injections later by another doctor; it was some sort of gel that acts like cartilage. 3 years later & I have hardly any pain & now have exercises to keep my hamstrings stretched :)
