One massive Toxic Megacolon!
Toxic Megacolon is a life threatening complication of Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).These diseases can be painful and cause permanent damage to the large and small intestines.IBDs include ulcerative colitis ,Crohn’s disease and infections caused by Clostridium difficile colitis. Toxic megacolon is characterized by swelling and dilation of large intestine due to the inflammation and accumulation of large amount of gas. The ultimate goal of the treatment is to decompress the bowel to prevent the air from further distending the bowel and treat toxemia and precipitating factors. Medication are prescribed to treat the condition,if caused by IBD.Otherwise, in the case of severity a Colectomy (surgical removal of all or part of the colon)is improvised.
