During pregnancy because of a lot of hormonal changes taking place oral health problems such as sensitivity, bleeding and swelling are common. To avoid this, extra care needs to be taken by a pregnant woman now more than ever with a developing baby. Excessive bacterial growth can enter the blood stream and into the amniotic fluid. This study was carried out by taking samples from a newborn baby’s stomach contents for evaluating the presence of bacterial species and relating them with those found in the mother’s mouth. Two of these bacteria were the ones not found elsewhere in the body except for the mouth. Reference: Society for General Microbiology.
