Rhinophyma - Potato Nose / Alcohol Nose

Rhinophyma - Potato Nose / Alcohol Nose

Rhinophyma is a deforming disorder of nose which is typically seen in advanced stage of Rosacea. It is usually characterized by a large, red, swollen and bumpy nose often seen in men between the age of 50 and 70 years. Clinical diagnosis is made upon thickened nasal skin along with telengiectasia and erythema of nose. However, diagnosis is always confirmed by histology. Histopathology often reveals hyperplasia and hypertrophy of sebaceous glands. In later stages, it may proceed to edema and fibrosis of sebaceous glands along with underlying cartilage. The patient may develop airway obstruction due to thickening of ala, leading to respiratory issues. Moreover, psychological distress due to social stigma of 'alcohol nose' is also seen in these patients. A number of treatment options such as cryosurgery, dermabrasion, electrocautery, coablation and laser are available these days. Image: Science Photo Library (SPL) References: Dick MK, Patel BC.
