An umbilical polyp is a rare, congenital lesion characterized as a distal remnant of Omphalomesenteric Duct (OMD), the duct that connects the yolk sac to the gut in an embryo. It is a round, firm, bright red mass which is typically lined by intestinal mucosa and has a sticky surface. An umbilical polyp may be difficult to differentiate from an umbilical granuloma. However, a polyp is relatively larger and has a bright red color. Also, unlike granuloma a polyp doesn’t respond to topical silver nitrate. A prompt investigation should be carried out to rule out other serious anomalies.
