Anthracosis

Anthracosis refers to the storage of carbon particles in the lung and regional lymph nodes. These particles accumulate in alveolar macrophages and are also transported to hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes, where the indigestible material is stored indefi nitely within tissue macrophages. Although the gross appearance of the lungs of persons with anthracosis may be alarming, the condition is innocuous.
