The colloid cyst

The colloid cyst

This patient came to the neurosurgical clinic after several months of not being able to walk properly and losing his memory. The scans showed a cyst in the middle of his brain which was stopping the normal drainage of fluid from in and around his brain. If the fluid has nowehere to go, it keeps building up until it causes major problems for the patient. This used to be known as "water on the brain" and If it happens suddenly, it can be fatal if left untreated... This gentleman has probably had this golf-ball sized cyst full of jelly for a long time and the brain has been trying to compensate for it. Now it can no longer deal with the pressure effects that the fluid is causing - causing his symptoms. There are many ways to remove these cysts, but this video shows what we call a minimally-invasive procedure, using a camera, to enter the fluid reservoir of the brain where the cyst is sitting, and remove it from the inside. Information for neurosurgical trainees: This video shows an endoscopic resection of a colloid cyst, toegther with a pellucidotomy. Scans shown include T1 pre- and post-contrast, T2 and a FLAIR.
