The burn wound healed with secondary intention leaving scar contracture behind, which is being repaired by a plastic surgeon here. Burn scar contracture refers to the tightening of the skin after a second or third degree burn. Scar formation happens first and then contractures occur when the burn scar matures, thickens, and tightens, preventing movement. In other words, when skin is burned, the surrounding skin begins to pull together, resulting in a contracture. It needs to be treated as soon as possible because the scar can result in restriction of movement around the injured area, as was seen in this patient. The contractures in this case were cut to free the hand movement and the overlying skin was sutured with fine proline. Photo by @ch.arslan626
