Epidermoid cysts are the most common asymptomatic and benign cutaneous cysts. While they may occur anywhere on the body, they occur most frequently on the face, scalp, neck, and trunk. They result from the proliferation of epidermal cells within a circumscribed space of the dermis, hence their similarity to the epidermis in terms of lipid pattern.Although rare, chronic irritation or repetitive trauma to the epithelial lining of the cyst is suggested to play a role in malignant transformation. They may also become inflamed or secondarily infected, resulting in swelling and tenderness.Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment; however, depends on the location of the cyst, the extent of resection is dictated by adherence of the tumor capsule to the surrounding vital structures.
