Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that occurs most often during accelerated growth just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Most cases are idiopathic. The curve is usually in the form of "S" or "C". In some, the degree of curve is stable, while in others it increases with time. Mild scoliosis usually does not cause problems, while severe cases can interfere with breathing. The diagnosis is usually confirmed with simple x-rays. Surgical correction is performed in severe cases and generally involves the use of modern instrumentation systems in which hooks and screws are applied to the spine to anchor long rods, which guarantees the correction of the curvature and its stability over time.
