This picture shows a rare birth defect known as gastroschisis! It's a congenital defect of the anterior abdominal wall in which the baby's intestines and content freely protrudes out of the abdominal cavity due to failure of the abdominal wall to develop probably after the disruption of the blood supply to the wall. The small and large bowel, stomach, and often the fallopian tube/ovary/testis herniate through the defect. This case necessitates urgent repair. Small defects may be closed primarily after manually stretching the abdominal cavity. Basically, the accompanied bowel wall edema subsides within a couple of days and the bowel readily reduces back into the abdominal cavity, after which the wall can be surgically closed.
