Incredible case showing the before-and-after of an avulsion amputation of the thumb with the tendons exposed!!! This devolved thumb got its tendons stretching all the way up to the forearm. Tendons cannot heal unless the ends are touching, which does not occur with a complete tear. In most cases, a cut or torn tendon must be repaired surgically. The reconstruction was done by reattaching the tendons back thought an incision made in the forearm to locate the exact point of detachment. The thumb possesses a unique and wide range of motion not shared by the hand's other digits. Not only does it bend its knuckle, but the tip of the thumb can touch the tips of the fingers. This range of motion greatly assists in the ability to grasp and hold items. The muscles of the thumb all contain the word "pollicis," and are distinguished by extensor, flexor, oppenens, and abductor designations. This includes longus and brevis descriptions depending on which tendon is longer, and indeed, they are long!
