Ophthalmia neonatorum

* It's any form of conjunctivits occurring in the first month of life. Any discharge from the eye if newborn is suspicious since tears aren't secreted at this early date **Etiology: ocular contact with contaminated maternal passages or towels 1-bacterial :gonococci,staphlococci,streptococci or pneumococci 2-viral: herps simplex and adenoviruse 3-chlamydia ***clinical picture : lid edema, marked conjunctiva edema, marked hypotenuse, subconjuctival hemorrhage, profuse purulent discharge ****Diagnosis :conjunctival smear, immunofluorescent tests *****prevention : 1-treatment of mothers before labor specially herpetic cervicitis 2-washing of the body of the baby from above downward 3-Broad spectrum antibiotic eye drops for one week ******treatment : 1-local antibiotic eye drops and ointment at night 2-removal of discharge by boric acid 3-systemic antibiotic in sever cases
