Basal cell carcinoma excision

Basal cell carcinoma excision

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer in humans. It typically appears on sun-exposed skin, grows slowly , and rarely metastasize.Other characteristic features of BCC tumors include the following:📍Waxy papules with central depression📍Pearly appearance (VIP in exams)📍Erosion or ulceration: Often central and pigmentedIn nearly all cases of BCC, the recommended treatment modality is surgical excision. If the tumour is on a cosmetically important area, Mohs micrographic surgery is the most effective technique for removing BCCs and SCCs.Mohs differs from other techniques in that microscopic examination of all excised tissues occurs during rather than after the surgery, thereby eliminating the need to "estimate" how far out or deep the roots of the skin cancer go. This allows the Mohs surgeon to remove all of the cancer cells while sparing as much normal tissue as possible.Exam Tip: Most Upper lip cancers are BCCs and most lower lip cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs)
