Doctors Identify Rare Pair of Semi-Identical Twins in Australia

Two four-year-old children have been identified as semi-identical twins, and they’re the only second set ever reported worldwide, according to Australian doctors. The boy and girl are identical on their mother’s side and share 100 percent of their mother’s DNA, but they’re like siblings on their father’s side and only share a small proportion of their father’s DNA, said a Queensland University of Technology Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation press release. The case, which was published in The New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday, is the first worldwide to identify semi-identical twins during pregnancy.

What is amazing about this case is that the kids share 89% of their DNA, are perfectly healthy, and it took over 2 years for the paper to be accepted by the journal
