Prealbumin (Transthyretin)

Prealbumin (Transthyretin)

Transthyretin (Prealbumin) is a transport protein like its brother albumin. As you can see in the picture it is actually a compund word and tells what TTR does in the body; transporting thyroxine (T4) and retinol binding protein bound to retinol (vitamin A). TTR is synthesized in the liver, choroid plexus and retinal pigment epithelium. Liver secretes it into to the blood, choroid plexus secretes it to the CSF (Cerebro spinal fluid) and retinal pigment epithelium secretes it to the eye. It is also a negative acute phase reactant. Being a complex protein, misfolding of TTR is associated with amyloid diseases such as SSA (senile systemic amyloidosis) or FAP (familial amyloid polyneuropathy).
