Pathophysiology :A type of type "2+3" hypersensitivity reaction. Antibodies formed against nuclear antigens. The immune complex deposits in different sites giving rise to different symptoms. Characterised by butterfly rash and photosensitivity; usually in reproductive age females. Risk factors are genetics ( susceptibility genes) and environmental triggers ( smoking, viruses, bacteria, medications, sex hormone : estrogen). Joint pain is due to deposition of immune complexes in joints. Classic presentation : Fever, joimtpain, rash in a women of reproductive age group. The symptoms occur in flares.
