Must know Innervations! @rev.med is here for you, we got your back! Nerve supply! Remember all the glands for Salivary secretions in the face such as submandibular and sublingual are supplied by CN 7 Facial Nerve BUT Parotid gland is supplied by CN 9 Glossopharyngeal Nerve! It’s important to know this because during dissection you will get confused because Facial Nerve (as in the picture) is found right underneath the Parotid gland. Instagram @rev.med Parotid gland The parasympathetic innervation to the parotid gland has a complex path. It begins with the glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve 9). Synapses with the otic ganglion. The auriculotemporal nerve then carries parasympathetic fibres from the otic ganglion to the parotid gland. Sublingual & Submandibular Innervation originates from the superior salivatory nucleus through pre-synaptic fibres via the chorda tympani branch of the facial nerve (CNVII). The chorda tympani then unifies with the lingual branch of the mandibular nerve (CNViii) before synapsing at the submandibular ganglion. All this and more can be found in our “Cranial Nerves” video coming soon, for now check out the link in our bio! Please subscribe to our YouTube channel, and follow us Instagram @rev.med!
