Hi, I’m (prepare yourself) 13 years old and have a passion for medicine. I study it in my free time, and all I can think about is one day becoming a doctor. (Specifically a neurosurgeon, the brain and it’s complexities are so amazing) I’ve read through the Gray’s Anatomy textbook at least 4 times, but I was wondering if you has any tips for an aspiring Dr? (I’m a Caucasian female, if that helps) I’ve been trying to volunteer at hospitals or shadow hospital workers, but I keep facing rejection due to my age, any tips?
I want to be a neurosurgeon as well and I'm 14!! I think the brain is super amazing 😱 I'm almost obsessed with it 😂 I'm studying in my free time as well and I'm always borrowing books at the library. I would study some more and prepare even better, so you can try and volunteer at a hospital when you're a little older. I'm planning to do it myself just before I'm going to college. I think then you'll have a smaller chance of rejection. Just a tip 😊 oh, and if you read a disease or a part of the body you're unfamilliar with, always look it up! And read the text below a picture in this app (I don't know if you do that, but just saying). It really helped me. And try to diagnose the diseases they offer in this app. It's fun, challenging and it's really helpful for studying. I hope I helped you a little further 😊 Good luck!
I've taken some CPR classes, they're very informative. Thank you for the advice, that actually happens to be the song my parents say they sing through in their head while doing CPR, too 😊
I've got another tip 😅 have you started to practise performing CPR? Not that it's necessary at out age, but if you have, or if you're going to in the future, remember this: there is a song called Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees and that beat is perfect for perfoming CPR, so if you're going to practise, you should put up that song and try to push on the beat.
That's great😉 I want to be a doctor too. I'm more interested in the heart. I really want to be a heart specialist and I hope that all my dreams will become true.
That’s awesome that u re all are interested in medicine but u re so young instead of being a volunteer u should learn biology chemistry well don’t rush
Hey Keira. Thats good. But hold your horses. Dont rush. Take it easy, take it slow. If what youre telling is the truth and you've read entire Gray's anatomy from cover to cover 4 times, I think you have enough time to read Molecular biology. There are a few good Books. One titled The Cell would be a good start. Read in detail about Molecular biology. How a cell works. What are Organelles, How they function, How the cell membrane is organised, What are Channels, Signal transduction pathways, So on and so forth. It will be very useful to you in the future to understand Pathology, especially neuropathology. Read in detail about the Blood brain barrier. When youre done with Molecular biology, Go for Physiology. If you need help, ask a peer who is willing to. All the best. Hope to see you one day as a top Neurologist. For now, Dont rush to hospitals and try to help. Theres a lot of time for that. I know youre excited to, But first, Read, learn, Observe, Practice.
I’m going to echo this. She gave the response that any one in the field would actually tell you. It’s great to be interested, but you have to develop a foundation and a basic understanding to build upon for many, many years before you get to neurosurgery. If you want some animated views instead of a book reading, go to YouTube and look up CrashCourse Biology. They’re fun and helpful for the basic sciences. Take a step back and understand the bodies natural processes for doing what it does. They’re incredible!
Hi ,I’m 12 years old and I love medicine. I have aspired to be a orthopedic surgeon or a pediatric surgeon. Since I’ve been to the hospital for my arm the 5th time in kindergarten.Since then I’ve been learning all I can and excelling in school. For instance my math class is now at a high school level tho I’m a 7th grader.Keira I am also a Caucasian Female.I have gotten to few books but my mom passed me down her collage anatomy book, it’s called Seeley’s Anatomy & Physiology eleventh Edition.
It's so cool to hear about people so similar to me! I've read Seeley's and I must say, to me it has proven a great resource. Erin, I wish you luck, and I hope to see you making headlines as an amazing orthopedic/pediatric surgeon one day!
I’m glad you are reaching out to hospitals for shadowing opportunities. That’s a great idea. However, Its a lot of liability having someone shadow you. Hospitals unfortunately have to walk on eggshells and that is to the demise of someone trying to learn. Lots of it is HIPPA stuff, things you may see, etc... This makes it Especially hard for someone your age. I didn’t get to see an actual ER and shadow someone until I was 18 years old. Also keep in mind, it is a very LONG process to become a doc. About 8+ years of school minimum and lots of long nights, difficult exams and high stakes and competition. However, if you are truly passionate about it, the end result is far worth it. I advise you to stick with it for sure. I was no younger than you were when I decided I wanted to go into medicine! It’s wonderful that you want to become a doctor! However, it takes time. I suggest, learn the books, take some classes like biology, chemistry, anatomy, etc. and talk to your counselor at your school and see if they can help you. Take a first aid course even to get started! Hope I helped!
You definitely helped! Thank you! It's so amazing to hear how you have achieved your dreams
You might have read through it four times and you might have taken it for granted , but ever assessed what fraction of it you could grasp or recollect ? Only then will you truly realise the magnitude of this profession's difficulty. I definitely appreciate your curiosity, but i think you should rather focus on clearing high school and joining the best med school around your place. Also try watching House MD, Chicago med, The resident, New Amsterdam, The good doctor (purposefully not mentioning gray's) in the order if possible.
They're not just any random shows, they can shape a medico. In this case , inspire a future medico. House is more of physician oriented and unreal, chicago med is more into surgeons, others are relatively more realistic and balanced. This would give a great view into what this profession offers . too much reality in the first dose might seem boring that's why I kept the unreal ones first, trust me I know what I am doing. 😉
