. (A) Periapical infection of a mandibular premolar (note buccal cortical erosion above the buccinators muscle attachment). (B) Incision made into f luctuant swelling to the depth of the abscess cavity. (C) Curved hemostat used in opening motion in various directions to break loculations of purulence within the abscess cavity. (D) Insertion of a drain into the depth of the abscess cavity. (E) Suturing of the drain with a single suture.
