(A) The envelope incision is most commonly used to reflect soft tissue for removal of the impacted third molar. Posterior extension of the incision should laterally diverge to avoid injury to the lingual nerve. (B) The envelope incision is laterally reflected to expose bone overlying the impacted tooth. (C) When a three-cornered flap is made, a releasing incision is made at the mesial aspect of the second molar. (D) When the soft tissue flap is reflected by means of a releasing incision, greater visibility is possible, especially at the apical aspect of the surgical field.
