(B) The No. 178 forceps are then used to grasp the crown of the tooth and remove the crown and the distal root. (C) The Cryer elevator is then used to remove the mesial root. The point of the Cryer elevator is inserted into the empty socket of the distal root and turned in a wheel-and-axle fashion with the sharp point engaging interseptal bone and root, elevating the mesial root from its socket.
