Vertical root fracture

Pulp infections that are refractory to endodontic treatment may often result from vertical root fractures. A, This radiograph shows the placement of retrograde restorations in the apex of the mesial roots of this lower left first molar. B, This photograph shows that the restorations are directly in the root’s apex. C, After a little more than 1 year, the retrograde restorations are observed to have been dislodged, suggesting the possibility of a vertical root fracture.
