While inside the amniotic fluid, the blood of the baby is usually shunted from pulmonary circulation to systemic circulation via foramen ovale and ductus arteriosus. When the baby is delivered, an adrenaline rush occurs in the baby and the baby cries too both of which leads to clearing of the airway passage so that the baby could breathe in air. The shunts are closed over a period of time.
