Turn buckle cast

Turn buckle cast

Turnbuckle cast: this device is used to immobilize the entire trunk, one upper arm to the elbow, and the upper legs to the knee. It is constructed of plaster of Paris or fiberglass and incorporates a lateral hinge at the apex of the spinal deformity along its convexity and a turnbuckle (a threaded screw with a wing nut) on the concave side. Opening the hinge by distraction of the concave side, via the turnbuckle, would result in corrective lateral bending forces placed on the deformity, straightening the primary curve.
