A 14 year old female patient who is a practicing Jehovah Witness is admitted for anemia. The Physician determines that blood transfusions are necessary but the parents refuse to consent. The patient states that she wishes to be treated. What should you do next? A- contact local clergy for assistance in Crisis Intervention B- inform the patient that her parents must consent before treatment can be administered C- inform the patient that she is a minor and incapable of such decisions under the state law D- request administration contact the hospital attorney for legal counsel
Request administration contact the hospital attorney for legal counsel since she’s still underage and may actually want the blood, only her parent don’t. With Jehova’s witnesses they can decide for themselves from the age of 18, but an attorney needs to be involved should they be not 18.
At our facility if under age we assume the patient belongs to the nation hence proceed with transfusion and satisfy the objective of saving a life
In Ontario a 14 or old would be capable of giving consent independently as long as she was judged mentally capable of understanding the pros and con's Of treating and not treating
D is the correct answer. A is a possibility, B will just make the patient upset and there are ways to get her the transfusions. C
C if she was emancipated she could make her own decision. If parents refuse treatment and you give it any way you can be charged with tort and assault and possibly loose your license
